CENASEF is Portugal’s National Forest Seed Center and the only one of its kind in the country. It is a government service that has a team dedicated to harvesting forest seeds from standing trees.
It plays a key role in the collection, processing, and distribution of forest seeds in Portugal, especially conifer seeds.
CENASEF’s goal is to provide state nurseries, private nurseries, and the general public with seeds from 80 forest species, in sufficient quantity and quality, most of which are native.
The species harvested in the greatest quantity has always been maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), and this trend has continued.
