According to Decree-Law No. 205/2003 of September 12, as amended by Decree-Law No. 13/2019 of January 21, which establishes the rules governing the marketing of Forest Reproductive Materials (FRM)—seeds, plant parts, and plants — in the European Community, 48 species and artificial hybrids are subject to mandatory certification when intended for forestry purposes.

CENASEF is the National Forest Seed Center (of Portugal) and the only one of its kind in the country. It is a government agency that employs a team dedicated to collecting forest seeds from standing trees.

It plays a key role in the collection, processing, and distribution of forest seeds in Portugal, particularly with regard to conifer seeds.

CENASEF’s objective is to provide state nurseries, private nursery operators, and the general public with seeds from 80 forest species—mostly native—in a timely manner, ensuring both quantity and quality.

The species harvested in the greatest quantities has always been the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), and this trend has continued.
